SafeWork NSW launches its largest psychosocial hazards blitz

Inspectors are visiting NSW workplaces for six weeks to check how businesses manage psychosocial risks like stress, bullying and fatigue.

SafeWork NSW has started a six week program of proactive workplace visits focused on psychosocial hazards. The regulator describes it as its largest operation of this kind so far.

Psychosocial hazards are things at work that can harm mental health, such as high job demands, poor support, bullying, harassment, fatigue and exposure to traumatic events. Under WHS laws they must be managed like any other risk.

SafeWork NSW has reported that psychosocial related requests for service have more than doubled as a share of all requests in recent years, and the NSW Government has also launched a Psychosocial Advisory Service to help businesses.

What this means for you

  • Check that psychosocial risks are identified and controlled, not just physical ones.
  • Talk to your workers about workload, rosters and support.
  • Keep records of what you have put in place.
