Workplace exposure limits replace exposure standards from 1 December 2026
The model WHS Regulations move from workplace exposure standards to workplace exposure limits for airborne contaminants. Here is what that means on site.
Safe Work Australia has published amendments to the model WHS Regulations that transition workplaces to workplace exposure limits (WELs). These come into effect on 1 December 2026.
Exposure limits set the maximum airborne concentration of a hazardous chemical, dust or fume that a worker can be exposed to. Some values have been updated, so a level that was acceptable before may not be acceptable now.
Adoption and timing can vary between states and territories, so check with your local regulator for how it applies where you work.
What this means for you
- Review the substances used on your sites against the new limits.
- Update safety data sheet reviews, monitoring and controls.
- Make sure crews know about dust, fume and chemical controls.
